About Grootfontein Private Nature Reserve

Grootfontein Private Nature Reserve is a 1,200-hectare bushveld farm located less than three hours from Gauteng near the eco-tourism town of Thabazimbi. This fourth generation working family farm welcomes all true lovers of the great African outdoors. Grootfontein is proudly OFF-THE-GRID! We are an eco-reserve and work purely with solar power and gas. The reserve offers rustic accommodation in four bush lodges and two campsites that are all unique from each other and perfect for short or long stays. Guests can enjoy hot showers powered by paraffin, gas fridges, and solar-powered lights. Here, guests will find tranquillity and pristine, untouched bushveld landscape that is home to over 150 species of birds, 160 species of trees, and a wonderful range of animals including zebra, giraffe, kudu, impala, waterbuck, bushbuck, Blue wildebeest, nyala, warthog, and leopard. Since the farm does not offer the Big 5, guests are free to explore the area on foot. We are also less than an hour’s drive from the Pilanesburg and Marekele National Parks where the Big 5 can be viewed. In addition, we offer hiking, birding, 4x4 trails, kayaking, mountain biking, as well as themed weekends for mountain bikers, photographers and art lovers. We guarantee that your stay with us will leave you with fond memories that will remain with you for a long time after your stay at Grootfontein and we look forward to meeting you!

Rustic but with all necessities. Breathtaking scenery! Highly recommend.

It is a rustic getaway with a much needed plunge pool. It is very hot. The staff are very friendly and diligent. The kitchen could be better equipped . Overall we had a great stay but the place oversells itself. We saw very little game a few skittish impala and a giraffe.

All was awesome. Loved the " away from it all" feeling. Rock lodge shower can be upgraded maybe? Rest is fine!

We could not access the property to rough. No one even enquired where we are. We want our money back.Establishment Response: I’m sorry that you felt your car would not get over the gravel road, but we have had all kinds of sedans come in and out of the reserve over the years without problems and my own Citroen C4 is up and down the roads often. It’s definitely a dirt road – we are in a nature reserve - but it is driveable.
