About The Hooting Owl
The Hooting Owl guest house is a unique African thatch bushveld lodge set in a coastal environment. This hidden jewel was custom-built to blend harmoniously into its surroundings. The Hooting Owl is located in Marina Beach, on the Kwa-Zulu Natal South Coast, approximately two hours’ drive south from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.
The guest house is set in a sub-tropical forest with valley views and prolific bird life. Numerous bird species, vervet monkeys, grey and blue dyker and small bush buck inhabit the surrounding areas.
We provide our visitors with good quality, affordable self-catering accommodation. Choose from a large six-sleeper family unit with three double en-suite rooms, a three-bedroom, eight-sleeper self-catering cottage to our self-catering honeymoon cottage. We offer a range of accommodation to suite all tastes.
A starter pack of tea, coffee, sugar and milk plus a few toilet rolls will be provided. There is plenty of safe parking inside the premises; guests will receive a remote for easy access through the electric security gate during their stay. All guest areas are covered by an in-house alarm system linked to Chubb Armed Response.
The guest house can also be booked as a clothing-optional retreat for naturist groups by special arrangement, for complete peace, quiet and privacy, with valley views over the sub-tropical forest conservation area.
When the weather is good there are five Blue Flag beaches to choose from, Marina Beach or San Lameer being the closest. When the weather is bad there is also plenty to do, including horse riding, quad biking, bird watching, game drives, adventure tours, cultural tours, fishing, whale watching, diving, fine dining, spa treatments, shopping and much more. All activities can be booked in advance but it is not mandatory.

A deposit of 50% is normally required within 72 hours of the initial reservation to secure the booking. Failure to make payment or an alternative arrangement with the owner will result in the booking being cancelled and offered to another guest who is wait-listed for that period.
A breakage/key deposit of 10% of the full amount or R500, whichever is the greater, will be charged. This amount will be refunded after the inventory audit of the unit is completed and if the unit is left in a reasonably clean condition.
Due to the danger of mattress soiling, small children under three must use a travel cot. Children are not allowed to share their parent’s bed. A cot can be reserved if necessary.
Due to soaring electricity costs, the pool will only be heated on request. A charge of R150 per day will be levied for this service. Please inform the owner of this requirement when you confirm your reservation.
In cases where the booking is made at the last minute and it is impractical to pay a deposit in advance, full payment must be made on arrival.
A 2% administration fee will be charged on all cash direct deposits to cover incurred bank charges. Cash deposited by the owner will not incur additional fees.
Since the guesthouse does not have credit/debit card facilities, payment of the invoice balance should be done in cash or EFT on or before arrival. Free WIFI broadband is available.
Guests arriving late or departing early will NOT receive a refund under any circumstances.
Should additional guests arrive without prior notice to the owner, they will be charged the relevant rate for the room or unit being occupied.
If the room or unit booked is at full capacity, the additional guest(s) must book into an extra room or unit.
If the guesthouse is fully booked and no alternative accommodation is available, the additional guests will be asked to vacate the premises immediately.
Families with small children should also take note of the fact that the swimming pool is not protected by a fence or pool net. All children using the pool area must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times, regardless of whether they can swim or not.
