Gamkaberg Nature Reserve

Western Cape

Located a short distance south west of Oudtshroon, the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve is a small mountainous area put aside to help conserve a population of endangered Cape mountain zebra and it's natural habitat.

Gamkaberg is also host to many other wildlife creatures such as various antelope, aardwolf, honey badger, baboon, black-backed jackal, caracal, and the elusive leopard. Birders can also find a myriad of bird species in this area. The reserve features an extraordinary amount of varied flora; a diverse collection of Cape fynbos, karoo succulent, subtropical thicket, and evergreen forest.

Access to the reserve is via the main gate located on the northern side, open from sunrise to sunset. Visitors can browse the visitors center; there is an enjoyable labyrinth here for the curious, as well as picnic and braai facilities. Fire wood can be purchased at the reserve office.

The Tierkloof two-day hiking route is available and is recommended for fit hikers as the trails winds it way through mountain plateaus and deep ravines. For the 4x4 enthusiast is the 3-hour Zebra Crossing 4x4 Route.
